Important visa requirements for India

Are you travelling to India for a holiday or business trip and do you meet the requirements listed on this page? Then you can make use of an electronic visa for India. The so-called e-visa for India can be applied for easily online, which means that you do not have to go to a embassy, high commission or other counter for your INDIAN VISA AIRPORTS FOR ENTRY application.

Requirements for the purpose of travel to India

In the e-visa India application form, you must fill in your travel purpose. You can choose a tourist travel purpose if you are going to India on holiday or to visit family or friends. You can choose a business travel purpose if you are visiting a (potential) customer, supplier, trade fair or other business meeting. It is not permitted to use a business visa to attend a conference organised by the Indian government. If you fill in a business travel purpose, you may also undertake tourist activities in India. Under no circumstances are you allowed to enrol in an educational institution in India, be employed by an organisation in India or do voluntary work.

Do you want to visit a region in India to the north or east of Bangladesh? A tourist or business visa is not sufficient. Do you want to go to Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh? Then you must also apply for an additional permit. Do you want to go to Manipur, Mizoram or Nagaland? Then you need to report to an FRRO within 24 hours of your arrival in these states.

Passport requirements

You must have a valid passport which states that you are a national of the United Kingdom, Ireland, or another country in the European Union. Do you have a different nationality? Then check on this page whether you can still apply for your Indian visa online. Children also need their own passport and visa. In the application form for the e-visa India, you are asked to fill in your passport details. You must also take this same passport with you when you travel. Has the validity of this passport expired on arrival in India? Then bring both a new and old passport with you on your trip. On arrival in India, your passport must be valid for at least six months and contain two blank pages. You can only use a normal passport, not an emergency passport, a travel document for foreigners, a diplomatic passport or a Laissez-passer. If you were born in Pakistan, you cannot apply for your visa for India online.

COVID-19 and vaccination requirements

For a trip to India, it is in most cases necessary to get vaccinated. Some vaccinations are mandatory, others are only recommended. Have you been to Africa or South America in the six days prior to your trip to India? Then you may only enter India if you have been vaccinated against yellow fever. Some doctors also recommend a vaccination against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (DTP), Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid fever and Tuberculosis. You may have already received some of these vaccinations as a child, or in preparation for a previous trip. Before you leave, ask a doctor to inform you about the necessary vaccinations and possible malaria prevention.

Also take into account the remaining coronavirus rules in India. These have often changed. You should therefore check both well in advance and just before your departure what rules against the coronavirus in India you should take into account.

Validity period and maximum stay

After applying for your visa, you can still decide to change your date of arrival, as long as it falls within the validity period. Apart from the validity period, you need to consider the maximum duration of your stay. Whether you arrive at the beginning, or at the end of the validity period of the visa, does not matter for the maximum period of stay. Read more about this on the page about the validity period and maximum duration of stay of your visa for India.
